Secular Dances in the Secular Spaces
In this chapter a number of Balinese dance genres customarily presented in secular spaces are considered. These dances are usually performed just for recreation and entertainment and are not often put up on occasions connected with religious observances.
Secular Performances may be presented in a temporary theatre set up in a public square or street, or in a bale banjar (ward association hall), a wantilan (arena for cockfighting), or even in a permanent theatre building.
Very often nowadays tickets are sold, and the audience is provided with fixed, even reserved, seats. Electric lighting is increasingly common nowadays, but modern theatrical equipment is still rare.
